Today, President Biden Announced Two Presidential Directives Advancing Quantum Technologies.

The first, an Executive Order, reaffirms the Administration’s commitment to the National Quantum Initiative as a substantial and sustained national priority and establishes the NQIAC as a Presidential advisory committee.

The second, a National Security Memorandum, identifies key steps needed to maintain the Nation’s competitive advantage in quantum information science (QIS), while mitigating the risks of quantum computers to the Nation’s cyber, economic, and national security. It seeks to move the Nation quickly and equitably to quantum-resistant cryptography, while promoting leadership in quantum information science through a whole-of-government and whole‑of‑society strategy, including a coordinated, proactive approach to QIS research and development, an expansion of education and workforce programs, and a focus on developing and strengthening partnerships with industry, academic institutions, allies, and like-minded nations. It also gives guidance to agencies on the need for technology protection plans for QIST.
