2022 was a big year for national quantum policy, including two Presidential directives. See some highlights below and the Annual Report of the NQI Program.

I am most grateful for the people I get to work with every day. These include…

The amazing members of the National Quantum Coordination Office (we have 5 quantum experts in the White House!):

  • Dr. Gretchen Campbell, who joined NQCO/OSTP this year from NIST/JQI as the Deputy Director of the NQCO;
  • Dr. Alex Cronin, who returned to NSF earlier in the year;
  • Dr. Tanner Crowder, on detail from DOD/NRL;
  • Dr. Thomas Wong, on detail from DOE and on loan from Creighton University;

and, last but not least,

  • We say a very reluctant goodbye to Dr. Corey Stambaugh, who has done so much for the NQCO, NQI, quantum industry engagement, and quantum education, and OSTP/microelectronics. Corey returns to NIST in the new year.

When will you serve in the NQCO?

…and the Co-Chairs of our quantum subcommittees who oversee the NQI, subcommittee members, and representatives from the Agencies who implement the National Quantum Initiative programs.

…and our colleagues in OSTP, NSC, OMB.

When will you serve in government?

…and everyone in the quantum ecosystem we work in, both in the U.S. and our colleagues abroad.

Big thank you for being genuinely awesome.

Two Presidential directives:

National Security Memorandum 10 on Quantum Computing (saved copy) directing the Federal agencies to promote quantum R&D, workforce and education activities, and partnerships; move the Nation to quantum-resistant cryptography; and protect investments in QIST.

Executive Order on Enhancing the National Quantum Initiative Advisory Committee (saved copy) recommitting the U.S. to the National Quantum Initiative as a “substantial and sustained national priority” and relaunching the NQI Advisory Committee as a Presidential committee.

Augmenting the national quantum strategy:

SCQIS Releases Strategic Plan for Bringing Quantum Sensors to Fruition making policy recommendations to bring quantum sensors from lab to market and mission.

QIST Workforce Development National Strategic Plan based on significant interagency work with policy recommendations: EDUCATE/INSPIRE/EXPERIENCES/CAREERS.

Increasing international cooperation:
